STORIES OF STRENGTH

In the words of a few of our recent grant recipients - from their newsletters, press releases, business updates and thank you notes.

They tell their story far better than we can, and we are honored to have partnered with each of them in support of their efforts.

Donation of a Special Bed for a Special Child

Sometimes when coincidences happen, it is a sign that action needs to be taken. For Equipment Connections for Children (ECFC), this happened in November of 2015 when a Pedicraft Canopy Bed was donated by the Herbert family. They donated it to ECFC because their daughter was no longer using it. Then, the very next day a case manager, Reva, called Equipment Connections for Children about a child, Simone,  that needed a special bed for their home. The case manager went on to explain that the child was restless, up at night, had seizures, walked around and might leave the home unaided. As a consequence, the mother was up all night checking on her, never getting any rest. The child needed a canopy bed to keep her safe at night so that the mother could sleep and be ready for her day as a working parent with 3 children.

The Wolpoff Family Foundation made this donation possible because the bed frame was very large and a rental van was needed to move the bed from the Equipment Connections for Children’s storage site to the receiving family’s home. Equipment Connections for Children had two volunteers and the step-dad to help move it into the family’s home and help with the assembly. The assembly was quite complicated, but with the help of the family, the volunteers and the instruction sheet, the bolts were in place and the covers were placed on the bed, all within a few hours.

As you can see by the picture, all sides and the top of the bed are covered in a mesh and after putting up the side rail, it zips closed from the outside for the child’s safety. The side rails are padded and the mattress was firm padding as well. A very cozy place to sleep!

We would like to deeply thank you the Wolpoff Family Foundation for their donation to Equipment Connections for Children and for making this special donation possible for Simone and her family!

Manna's Goldberg Smart Snacks Program

Providing Healthy Food for Hungry Children

Since 1983, Manna Food Center’s mission has been to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County through food distribution, education, and advocacy. With assistance from the Wolpoff Family Foundation, Manna has been able to grow the Karen Goldberg Smart Sacks program substantially from 27 schools to 60 schools, providing essential food to 3,255 children each week. The partnership between the Wolpoff Family Foundation and Manna ensures that children experiencing hunger and food insecurity will return to school on Monday mornings properly nourished and ready to learn. By feeding children, and providing nutrition resources, the Wolpoff Family Foundation and Manna are growing a generation of children who will better understand the need for good food in order to learn and succeed.
